{"id":8063,"date":"2020-11-04T14:16:03","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T14:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xpon.ai\/?p=8063"},"modified":"2023-05-23T00:55:33","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T00:55:33","slug":"quick-setup-guide-linking-bigquery-google-analytics-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xpon.ai\/gb\/resources\/quick-setup-guide-linking-bigquery-google-analytics-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Quick Setup Guide &#8211; Linking BigQuery and Google Analytics 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Linking BigQuery and Google Analytics is crucial for keeping your data longer than the default provided in GA4.<\/p>\n<p>Big Query is Google\u2019s cloud data warehouse product offering designed specifically for allowing users to run high-performance queries against large datasets using SQL.<\/p>\n<p>BigQuery export has long only been a feature available for Google Analytics 360 users, giving users the ability to drill down into hit-level data and perform analysis not possible using the Google Analytics web interface.<\/p>\n<p>Using BigQuery we are able to access raw data without being impacted by Google Analytics sampling and focus on users as opposed to simply analysing session-based data in the Google Analytics interface.<\/p>\n<p>With the introduction of Google Analytics 4, BigQuery export and its powerful query capabilities are now available and free for all Google Analytics 4 Properties, regardless of if they are GA 360 users or not.<\/p>\n<p>There are no billing charges involved when exporting data from a Google Analytics 4 property to BigQuery. You, however, may need to pay for storage and processing of queries if you exceed the free usage limits.<\/p>\n<p>This guide will demonstrate how we can easily set up BigQuery export for Google Analytics 4 Properties.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Where is Google Analytics 4 exported to in BigQuery?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When exporting data from a Google Analytics 4 Property, we can either export it to a free instance of BigQuery (BigQuery Sandbox) or a billed BigQuery project. It is important to note that while BigQuery Sandbox gives you free access to BigQuery, it does come with the following limits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Subject to free usage limits as the <a title=\"Free Usage Limit\" href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/bigquery\/pricing#free-tier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free tier<\/a>: 10 GB of active storage and 1TB of processed query data per month.<\/li>\n<li>All datasets, tables, views or partitions automatically expire after 60 days.<\/li>\n<li>No support for advanced BigQuery features such as streaming data, DML statement and the BigQuery Data Transfer Service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to overcome sandbox limits, it is recommended that you <a title=\"Upgrade BigQuery\" href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/bigquery\/docs\/sandbox#upgrading_from_the_sandbox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upgrade BigQuery<\/a> to a billed project if possible. It is important to note that upgrading to a billed project means you will be billed for any storage and processing that exceeds the BigQuery free usage limits.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Linking BigQuery and Google Analytics<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Here is a simple setup guide on how you can quickly link your Google Analytics 4 Property with BigQuery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: First make sure the BigQuery API is enabled on your Google Cloud Platform account.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to <a title=\"APIs &amp; Services\" href=\"https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/apis?_ga=2.98457951.1758483092.1604448595-1942846568.1594683664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APIs &amp; Services<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On the Library Page, search for BigQuery and select it.<\/li>\n<li>On the page that displays information about the API, click <strong>Enable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong>: Visit the <a title=\"BigQuery Cloud Console\" href=\"https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/bigquery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BigQuery cloud console<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong>: Next we need to set-up a new BigQuery project to export our Google Analytics 4 data to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4<\/strong>: In the toolbar at the top, click the dropdown and in the popup click <strong>New Project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center ss-htmleditorfield-file image\" title=\"Step 4a\" src=\"https:\/\/xpon.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Step-4a.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of how to create a new project in BigQuery\" width=\"1200\" height=\"140\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"leftAlone ss-htmleditorfield-file image aligncenter\" title=\"Step 4b\" src=\"https:\/\/xpon.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Step-4b.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of how to create a new project in BigQuery\" width=\"486\" height=\"106\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5<\/strong>: Give your BigQuery project a name and then click <strong>Create<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center ss-htmleditorfield-file image aligncenter\" title=\"Step 5\" src=\"https:\/\/xpon.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Step-5.jpg\" alt=\"Giving your new BigQuery project a name\" width=\"637\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6<\/strong>: Now navigate to your Google Analytics 4 Property.
